10 CSS Tools: Cheat sheet, CSS Desk, Lorem 2, CSS Guide, etc.

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010 | Business | 2 Comments

Recently I saw some css links that I thought were useful:

  1. CSS Desk – Real time development tool for trying out CSS changes
  2. CSS Cheat Sheet – Look up some of those properties that you always forget.  It is italic or italics?
  3. Don’t use @import – A comparison of performance using both @import and link
  4. Complete CSS Guide – In depth guide of the various controls we have in using CSS (probably more for beginners)
  5. Position is Everything – An entire blog devoted to CSS and web browser bugs
  6. CSS Working Group Blog – Stay up to date on CSS3 decisions, and CSS conversation
  7. CSS Type Set – A CSS tool that allows designers (and developers) to see how copy will look with various CSS controls, and the resulting CSS
  8. Lorem 2 – A “better” way to use Lorem Ipsum?  I’ve always used Lorem Ipsum, but this looks promising.
  9. CSS Text Wrapper – I’ve always wondered why CSS didn’t support (and still doesn’t really) more complex shapes.  This tool attempts to allow us the control we’ve been wanting, although the output is complex, it may fit the bill for a few sites out there.
  10. CSSTidy – Open source CSS parser and optimizer.

Opera Mini App approve by the Apple App Store

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010 | Business | 1 Comment

We can all surf the web on our iPhones in a browser other than Safari, please welcome the new Opera Mini App.

Opera Mini App approved for the App Store, I didn’t think it would happen but it did.  Apple let some slight competition through the filter.

Could video chat / iChat be coming to the iPhone or iPad?

Saturday, April 10th, 2010 | Business | No Comments

An article over at TUAW, iChatAgent process shows up in iPhone OS 4.0 — video conferencing coming?, has a few screenshots taken of iPhone OS 4.0 testers that lists “iChatAgent” as a running process.

I feel that not only could this mean the iPhone may have video conferencing, but it is highly likely that an iPad refresh in the next year will have video chat as well.

We can only hope…

Web Developers: How to test Flash disabled versions of pages

Friday, April 9th, 2010 | Business | No Comments

To test, on your machine, what it would look like for someone who doesn’t have flash (iPhone / iPad) or has flash disabled (some ultra sensitive geek), do the following:

  1. Launch Firefox
  2. Tools ->Add-ons
  3. Scroll down to “Shockwave Flash”
  4. Click on “Disable”
  5. Refresh or Load the page

You can do this in other browsers, I just find it easiest in Firefox.

Apple iPhone OS 4.0: Sneak Peek at 10 am Pacific Today

Thursday, April 8th, 2010 | Business | No Comments

If you have somehow forgotten, today Apple will be providing us a sneak peek at the iPhone OS 4.0.

Here is one thing I believe will be announced:

  1. Multitasking (confirmed) – It has to be announced, the iPad sorely needs this to stay competitive as does Apple in the mobile phone market

That list isn’t long, but here is what I’d love to see, and why I think we may see it:

Computer Security: Microsoft Security Essentials

Thursday, April 8th, 2010 | Business | No Comments

I’m not always the biggest fan of Microsoft, but I have to admit they have a large reach and significant resources.

Recently a friend of mine mentioned his MSN account got hacked, and that it was a vulnerability in “some Microsoft software”.

It’s scary just how much your email account controls nowadays.  In my friend’s example, his credit cards were manipulated, his facebook account stolen, his email was hijacked (duh), and many of his other accounts linked to that email were stolen.  Our email account is used to validate bank accounts (occasionally, although many other means of security are used), many of our “social” accounts, medical records, credit cards, and almost everything we do.

Microsoft recently suggested that he install their recent piece of security software to prevent this …

What can you do to protected yourself, for free?

Quick Tip: Delete Temporary Internet Files / Clear Cache – Shortcut Keys in IE8

Monday, April 5th, 2010 | Business | 1 Comment

Web developers have to refresh browser caches a lot (if we even have our browsers set to cache) — if you want a quick way to pull up the “Delete Browsing History” screen in IE8:

It’ll pop up, click “Temporary Internet Files” and then “Delete”.  It will stop you from having to click into the menus up top.

Bonus – Force IE8 to “Always Refresh from Server”

If you’re in IE8 and are constantly refreshing the cache, why not temporarily force refreshed content:

Hit F12 (for the Developer Tools)
Click on menu item “Cache” and click on “Always Refresh from Server

You can look back in there to see a checkbox next to it, so you know it’s on.  It will let you always refresh from the server for just the current browser session (very useful).
