Apple TV: Why I believe in It
I’ve had an Apple TV for about 3 or 4 years now. The old one that is, and have been very happy with my purchase. I know it wouldn’t have had a major impact being it costs about $300 and to be useful, requires the end user to be pretty saavy with the setup. I think the new Apple TV is enough of a departure to possibly be a BIG thing.
iTunes 10 is Available, iPod/iOS/AppleTV updates!
I’ve been trying to download it all day, finally seeing it available at Apple.com.
Yesterday Apple announced some new features to iTunes 10, some new iOS builds (4.1 and 4.2), new iPod models, and a new Apple TV line.
I’m a big fan of the Apple TV, and am very excited to hear it’s getting an upgrade (and a huge price cut, I paid $300 and was happy to do so). I may finally be able to have one on every TV in the house — without feeling guilty about it.
Apple TV has been the viewing platform of choice in our house on and off. It’s so easy to rent a nice looking movie (sorry Netflix, but the quality is just much better on Apple in my opinion — but I love the free movies). With the news that TV shows will be rentable, suddenly that $150 a month cable seems more optional than ever.
At $0.99 (the rumored price of renting a TV show) that’s 150 tv shows a month. Bye bye cable! If only you didn’t have my internet connection.
Web development with the iPhone and iPad in Mind
In the very near future, I will be posting a series of posts on what you should/shouldn’t be doing to develop a website where the iPhone and iPad are a target demographic. jQuery will figure prominently in the series, as I’ve seen almost all websites now require work with jQuery (or anther AJAX platform).
Let me know if you have any specific questions / concerns, and I’ll be glad to answer them.
Some interesting things to think about:
- How are mouse clicks triggered? (It’s not as straightforward as you’d think)
- How are hover states triggered? (Hint: the iPad has a hover state, but it’s not what you think — remember you only have a single touch, no arrow following your finger)
- What types of gestures can we use?
- What special considerations must we make for CSS?
- What are the ideal screen dimensions? (this is easy, but remember we have multiple devices, and multiple orientations)
- What types of video can we play? (iPad, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 3G, iPhone 2G and the original iPhone all have different specifications, it’s not that easy)
iOS 4 Scheduled to Release Today
The new Apple mobile operating system, iOS 4, is supposed to be released today. Historically Apple makes their moves at 1pm eastern (10am pacific). I wouldn’t be surprised to hear someone finds the link to iOS4 a bit early today.
As soon as it becomes available, I will let everyone know!
Web Developers: How to develop for iPhone / iPad / iPod Mobile Safari
In short, don’t. It’s an uphill fight.
There are a few obstacles in developing for the iPhone / iPad I thought I’d post while it was on my mind:
- How can I test my “mobile” site?
- How can I see errors on my iPhone?
- Why is the iPad and iPhone different?
Basically Apple has decided to make life difficult for web developers. This was ideally done to improve the user experience on their mobile platforms, but I don’t think it was fully thought out.
Steve Jobs to do keynote at WWDC 2010: iPhone 4G to follow, HTML5 authorware?
I saw that Steve jobs will be doing the keynote of the Worldwide Developers Conference 2010.
This can only mean a few things;
- The new iPhone 4G will be announced (very likely)
- Apple will move away from AT&T (hopefully, I’m getting doubtful though)
I also believe there will be other announcements regarding development environments for HTML5. Given Steve Jobs’ strong HTML 5 support over the previous months, and the recent love/hate relationship (mostly hate) with Adobe — something tells me we will be seeing Apple competing with software for HTML 5.
Adobe demos Android Table with Flash (and Air)
From the article, Adobe Shows Google Android Tablet as Apple iPad Alternative, Adobe has demoed an Android tablet.
Now bloggers have seen it in action, thanks to Adobe, which showed off an Android tablet at Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco, held May 3 to 6.
The images and videos (and laughs) come courtesy of Zedomax, which scored this scoop, noting the device supports Adobe Systems’ Flash and Air.

Google and Adobe later confirmed that Android would support Flash, the ultimate riposte alliance to Apple’s snubbing of Adobe.
Adobe is obviously trying to bite back at Apple for the many comments about how bad Adobe’s Flash platform is for mobile devices.
Will the table running Flash prove any of Steve Jobs’ ‘Thoughts on Flash’ wrong?
