Help: How do I announce a new website?
We launch websites every month or two for clients, and make many website updates. What are the best ways to tell the “internet” that your site is up, and ready to be checked out? I’m going to focus on the free options, as I find anything that costs money sketchy (especially with regard to listing a site).
We can divide this into a few categories:
- Search Engines
- Social Networking
- Peer Sites
- News Aggregators
Google executives convicted in Italy, because of uploaded content!
According to an article on the BBC site, Google bosses convicted in Italy, three Google executives were convicted because they “allowed” someone to upload a video of an autistic kid being bullied.
From the article:
The Google employees were accused of breaking Italian law by allowing the video to be posted online.
Judge Oscar Magi absolved the three of defamation but convicted them of privacy violations.
The UK’s former Information Commissioner Richard Thomas said the case gave privacy laws a “bad name”.
The three employees, Peter Fleischer, David Drummond and George De Los Reyes, received suspended six-month sentences, while a fourth defendant, product manager Arvind Desikan, was acquitted.
David Drummond, chief legal officer at Google and one of those convicted, said he was “outraged” by the decision.

The Death Blow to IE6?
Web developers are constantly fighting the IE6 battle.
We don’t want to support it, but all too often IE6 represents 10% of our client’s visitors — and you can’t tell a client they can’t talk to 10% of their visitors. If it’s an ecommerce site that could be a 10% decrease in sales.
Recently many large sites have announced the looming demise of Internet Explorer 6. Site’s such as Google Docs, Google Sites, YouTube (surprise, a Google company), and many others. Rumors are spreading this will include Gmail, Google Calendar, and other Google products too (maybe the sacred Google Search).

Posted on flickr, css mess, is one artist’s (atzu) homage to the problems all web developers face in IE6. As the creator says:
By the way, I wanted to thank all these major sites as Youtube, Facebook, Google that are not supporting Internet Explorer 6 anymore.

Google Buzz: Turn off the Buzz
A few days ago Google buzz launched. This included automatically starting up Google buzz in your Gmail account, and automatically setting your followers.
While nice of Google (and scary), automatically assuming Gmail users would want Google buzz to share who you are following with your followers — was a poor assumption. › Continue reading
Help: I Can’t log into Google AdSense
Yesterday I went to login to my Google Adsense account and found myself in an infinite loop of “Click here to login”, then “Sign up” as the only option. There were no options to actually login. This was very frustrating.
Normally I’m used to logging in with:
https://www.google.com/adsense/
This would usually redirect me to the site, and all would be fine. Now when I go there, all I see is a “Sign up now” button. If I click on “Sign up now”, there is a link that says “Already have an account?” and points to the help files for AdSense, which isn’t much help.
After searching around I ran into a forum post at WebmasterWorld.com, Can’t Log-in To AdSense – Asking to Update to Google Account.
There I found an answer from what appeared to be a Google rep:
OK, we think we’ve figured out what’s going on here (and by “we” I mean my friend the engineer). It looks like this issue is only happening to folks who signed up for adsense before we asked everyone to use a google Account. When we migrated everyone over to google Accounts, if you used the same email address for your google Account as for your previous account, you may be experiencing problems with your login screen right now. This also explains why so many WebmasterWorld people are seeing this problem, as you guys tend to be some of our most experienced adsense publishers. We’re still working on correcting the issue, but I’ll get back to you as soon as we’ve got something in place. In the meantime, some publishers experiencing this same issue have reported that they can log in using this URL: https://www.google.com/adsense/login2. Let us know if you’re still having issues logging in using this URL.
Resolution – How To Login

Google Nexus One: New video, and ramblings
Right up front, I’m getting one. Rumors say that it will be $99 for current “Google” users. I’m hoping that means at least one of the dozens of Google services that I’m currently signed up for. While I am getting one, I won’t be replacing my current iPhone 3GS with it, just testing it out. Only if I really love it will I consider leaving AT&T and my beloved iPhone. › Continue reading
