Happy Holidays 2011
Thought this house’s lights were awesome.
Now time to finish those projects that everyone wants done (all at the same time), close up the editor, and enjoy a weekend with the family.
Happy Holidays Everyone
NetQuote: Spam, Unsolicited Submissions, and Bad Leads
This is less technical, and a warning to those getting involved in automated lead generation systems… and those using it.
Nine months ago I, as a consumer, tried using one of them online “Car Insurance Quote” systems. It was powered by NetQuote (which I found out recently). I know they’re all garbage, but it would at least get me in contact with some insurance companies to survey the options available, as my life has changed significantly since I started out with my first car insurance (big city to small town, single to married, apartment street parking to garage parking, from 24 to 32).
I did this because my insurance was coming up for renewal …
This morning, I’m sitting at my computer coding, and I get 4 emails at the same time, about a car insurance quote I had requested (I hadn’t!). A few minutes later my phone rang, someone was calling about my car insurance quote online.
Friday Client Humor
Saw these earlier, I think I have heard every single one:
My iPhone is Fixed, Thanks Apple!
I dropped my iPhone 4 coming down the stairs, and it shattered. (picture is in yesterday’s post)
My phone is used heavily throughout the work day, so I needed to get it fixed / replaced. First thing I do is make an appointment at the local Apple store (Providence, RI), and head on out.
On the way to the Apple store, I see the “flat tire” indicator turn on. Ok, I can drive with a tire that’s going flat no problem…
BOOM!
My iPhone Broke, Glass Shattered
It finally happened to me. My iPhone 4 broke (after only 9 months of throwing it around).
I was walking downstairs, and dropped it on a wooden floor. It didn’t seem that bad, until I picked it up and it was crazy cracked.
Now I begin my journey of “Do I get the 4S? Can I do this in the 2 days before vacation?”.
I’ll let you know how it’s resolved, and how much this sets me back.
Earthquake, in Rhode Island?
I swear I just felt the house moving around a little. I just through I had been staring at code too much, but I had just read on CNN that there was an earthquake in NY / DC.
In case you’re curious, you’re not crazy.
Lets hope everyone had it as minor as I just did (just the monitors swaying a little).
UPDATE 8/23/2011 @ 2:33PM
There was an earthquake. Some relevant links:
- Quake Strieks near Washington
- Twitter search for Earthquakes in RI (you can follow me @seangw)
- WPRI – Yes, that was an earthquake you just felt in Rhode Island
So far it seems minor, and no reported injuries or deaths. I guess that also means no photos to be posted about the earthquake?
If it ever starts working again, you can report what you felt at the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program.
Safari Room, Newport, RI – A Bad Restaurant Review
I apologize to everyone who reads this blog for the tech / web development content. The following is something I felt the need to post regarding a bad restaurant experience I had (I have some obligatory tie in’s to web development, but this is mostly a restaurant review).
This past weekend, the wife and I were looking forward to having dinner at a new restaurant for us, Safari Restaurant & Lounge at OceanCliff in Newport, RI. We don’t go to “nice” places much, but we are no strangers to “fancy” restaurants. Needless to say, it let us down.

That’s for all you font nerds out there.
XKCD: Server Attention Span
I’ve said it before, don’t redirect a mobile user asking for a specific page … TO THE HOME PAGE. It’s just not good for anybody.
Now I see XKCD did a comic on it, Server Attention Span (click the image to see the full size):
Please share, it makes me happy:
