W3 Total Cache: Version 0.9.2.4 Supports MediaTemple ProCDN

Thursday, September 8th, 2011 | Business | by

I love Media Temple for web hosting (anyone who I’ve worked with knows they are the first hosting company I recommend).  I love W3 Total Cache for speeding up my WordPress sites.

The two are now married.  Err… maybe they’re friends?  At least … they are connected.

The new version of W3 Total Cache added API support for MediaTemple’s ProCDN offering (it’s EdgeCast but rebranded as MT).

To get the required Account #, and Token you need to log into your EdgeCast (ProCDN) account.

For MediaTemple customers:

  1. Log in to your Media Temple AccountCenter
  2. Click “Admin” next to your “procdn.net” Add-On Service
  3. Click “EdgeCast Control Panel” to log into your EdgeCast account

Once you are logged into the EdgeCast Admin:

  1. Copy your “Account #” from the top left corner of your screen
  2. Click “My Settings” in the top right corner
  3. Copy your “Token” from the “Web Service REST API Token

To be honest, I have no idea what functionality this introduces.  It doesn’t seem to do anything (I still have to type in my CNAME to replace my hostnames with) … but I would expect it, in the future, to purge files that are published or updated.

The EdgeCast API support includes the following (I only listed the services that W3 is likely to integrate/support):

  • LoadFileToEdge – Loads file from origin to edge servers.  This would be used it we updated a file on WordPress, we could finally force it to load to edge.
  • PurgeFileFromEdge – Removes a file from edge servers.

There are many more functions, but I believe these will be the two that we’ll see W3 take advantage of.
