According to an article on CNET, When will Apple announce a Verizon iPhone, rumors are circulating at CES that Apple is holding a press event on 1/11/11.
The article also says Apple is limiting vacation and time off in Apple stores for January and February.
All signs point to FINALLY!
I’m wondering a few things.
- Will we still be able to talk and use data on a CDMA iPhone? CDMA itself can’t support voice and data simultaneously (hence all the AT&T commercials touting that) — but new CDMA wireless standards may allow a new baseband controller from Qualcomm to use CDMA and GSM at the same time.
- How will contracts work with Verizon? Will the prices for the Verizon iPhone be the same as AT&T, it’s going to be tough to wrangle over some iPhone users because of the new cancellation fees AT&T has strategically setup.
- Price points?
- Will it support tethering? Will it cost extra?
- What will the implications of agreements with AT&T be? For example AT&T used to force certain restrictions on iPhone apps, was that in the expiring contract?
Mostly I expect the options to reflect what they currently are on AT&T. After all Verizon doesn’t have to bring much to the table except better service to win.
I do hear that there will be an iPhone 5 halfway through the year (in the usual iPhone development cycle). This could be costly if we all get a Verizon iPhone in February, only to need to upgrade in 3 months. I don’t know if I can stomach paying $1000 in a single year for iPhones ($300 for the new phone, and another 600 for a non subsidized version a few months later)
