Notepad++: Unknown exception on launch with NppFTP

Saturday, January 15th, 2011 | Business | by

When working with sites that use “FTPES (Explicit)” as the connection type, I find after accepting an invalid certificate (code 20) for a connection, I cannot relaunch Notepad++ with the following error:

Unknown exception

This prevents you from using NppFTP the next time you launch.

The Solution

I’ve contacted the developer of the plugin and have sent some files for testing, but until then, here’s what I do to go about my merry way:

  1. If open, Close Notepad++ (it saves the settings upon closing)
  2. Open up the following folder (I’m on Windows 7):
  3. Delete the “Certificates.xml” file (I haven’t found any problems doing this, I just have to confirm invalid certificates again)
  4. Launch Notepad++

It is annoying to do this every time you launch, I find that I leave Notepad++ open for days at a time to avoid this problem — but it works.

Thank the developer harrybharry for all his work at NppFTP on SourceForge.

That bug is already fixed as per the source site. Hence you dont need to delete files anymore.

Thanks for your input James, but I still get the error whenever I try to connect again after using a certificate. I’m still living by this fix myself :(

I’ve just downloaded the latest source (Sept 2011) for notepad++ and nppftp, and I still get this error.

It’s a shame, because what I want to do most is open/edit/save files from a remote location using secure FTP.

I’m surprised nobody has actually made some kind of secure FTP plugin for NPP supporting SFTP / FTPS!

It is working like a charm, You NEED TO DELETE the files however. So delete the files as explained in the article. You will be set to go.

Thank you. This solved a huge problem for me!
I would like you to report this to Notepad++ so that they could do something about it.

Already created a bug like 6 or 8 months ago. Sadly the new version didn’t include a fix for it.

I just set up a zCron to delete the certificate file on a regular basis. That way I do not get the error if I do end up closing NPP.

I had the same problem …
what i done to avoid delete “certificates xml” everytime I launch notepad++…is ..right click on ” certificates xml” file…click on property. In general tab ..on the bottom make sure “Read-only” attributes checked… notepad++ could not write craps on it. it worked for me ! no more deleting .. :)hope this would help some of you….

Hi Sean,

thank you for this post! It took me just few minutes to get a solution by using Google. Shame on me I’ve tried to fix it by myself near one hour! .. :/

@TK: Great solution for the moment!

Best regards!

Problem went away for me after uninstalling FingerText. I’m on 6.3.

June 4, 2013

this post helped me to solve the issue. I uninstalled deleted folder in program files list and the c:\Users\{Name}\AppData\Roaming folder then reinstalled. It was a pain in the ass to do…but it wasn’t as painful as getting the error every time i opened.
